Hookhouse Farm Wedding Surrey

A Farm. A Barn. A 250-Year-Old Oak Tree. And SO many great photos.

Hookhouse Farm is the kind of place that makes my job ridiculously easy. Tucked away in the rural village of Outwood near Redhill, this family-run working farm is surrounded by 340 acres of National Trust countryside - and from a photographer's perspective, that is pure gold. We're talking rolling fields, open skies, and light that actually seems to know what it's doing.

It's a dry hire venue, which means couples get to build their day entirely in their own image. No cookie-cutter packages, no "please only use our approved florist." Just freedom, creativity, and whatever wild, brilliant vision is in your head. And when couples are given free reign? That's exactly when I get to shoot the most incredible, colourful, utterly personal weddings.

The Barn

The heart of Hookhouse is a 17th-century threshing barn, and it photographs like a dream. We're talking exposed oak beams, rustic stone walls, and a completely blank canvas that bounces light in the most gorgeous ways. Whether couples fill it with hanging greenery and candlelight, or riot it out with colour, neon signs and paper cranes (yes, I've seen that - it was STUNNING), the barn becomes the perfect backdrop.

Because the venue is dry hire and hosts only 10–15 weddings a year, every single wedding I've photographed here has looked completely different. One week it's minimal and white, the next it's a full-on fiesta of dried flowers and gin bottles. The barn holds all of it beautifully. That's the sign of a truly great photography location - it enhances the couple's personality rather than competing with it.

The Ceremony

Say "I do" under a 250-year-old oak tree.

Right, now we need to talk about The Home Paddock. Because this is where the real magic happens for ceremony photography. Picture this: a mowed aisle through a wildflower meadow, leading to an ancient oak tree that has literally been growing for two and a half centuries. Views sweeping out across the Surrey Hills. Guests sat in the dappled shade. The couple walking towards each other with the whole of summer around them.

From a photography standpoint, it's almost unfair how beautiful it is. The light filtering through the oak's canopy creates the most gorgeous natural catch-lights. The wide open countryside means I can pull back for sweeping landscape shots with the couple tiny in the frame, then rush in close for the absolute joy on their faces as they read their vows.

The Golden Hour Opportunity

Because the Home Paddock is open with unobstructed countryside views, golden hour at Hookhouse Farm is absolutely bonkers good. In summer, when the sun drops low behind the Surrey Hills, you get this warm amber light flooding across the meadow. I always build a short golden hour couple shoot into the timeline here - even just 15 minutes gives us those glowy, backlit portraits.

The Garden

Welcome drinks in the farmhouse garden

The farmhouse front garden is where the party really starts to loosen up, and it's one of my favourite places to work all day. After the ceremony, guests spill out here for welcome drinks, lawn games, and general merriment - and this relaxed, golden-hour-adjacent time is absolute documentary photography heaven.

There's something about the combination of a working farm setting, a cold drink, and a complete lack of formality that makes people themselves. Grandparents chatting on hay bales. Kids pelting each other with confetti. The couple sneaking off for a cuddle behind the barn. These are the images that people cry over at their album viewing - not the posed group shots, but the real, spontaneous, completely unguarded moments that tell the actual story of the day.

The farmhouse itself provides gorgeous textural backdrops too - weathered stone walls, wooden doors, old farm machinery. Colours just pop against it. If your bridesmaids are in bold hues, the stone walls give you that contrast that makes photographers weep with joy.

My top tips for amazing photos at Hookhouse

Lean into the wildness

Don't try to tame Hookhouse into something manicured. The meadow grass, the rustic farm equipment, Field Marshall the bull in the background - it all adds texture and story to your photos. Embrace the working farm feel.

Go bold with colour

The neutral tones of the barn and stone walls are a photographer's playground for colour. Rich florals, bright ribbon, colourful confetti - this venue can handle maximalist colour without looking chaotic. Go for it.

Plan for golden hour

Build 15–20 minutes into your evening timeline for a couple shoot in the paddock as the sun goes down.

The Secret Ingredient

The cows.

I have to mention it. Because Hookhouse Farm is a real working beef farm, at certain times of year the cows are housed within walking distance of the wedding barn. And the famous Field Marshall - the farm's enormous bull - has been known to moo at particularly dramatic moments during ceremonies.

This is not a problem. Some of the funniest, most joyful images from my Hookhouse weddings have involved guests absolutely losing it because a cow has wandered up to the fence to observe proceedings. Laughter is the best thing to photograph. Real, uncontrollable, can't-breathe laughter - that's what Hookhouse Farm and its resident wildlife deliver, and I am here for every second of it.

"A special mention needs to go to Field Marshall, the Farm's enormous bull that mooed at entertaining moments and was subject to a fair few photos!" Rosie & Dave, Hookhouse Farm newlyweds

The bottom line? Hookhouse Farm in Surrey is one of those venues where I consistently produce some of my favourite work of the year. It's got the history, the landscape, the light, the freedom, and the charm. It's intimate enough for 90 guests to feel like everyone is truly together, yet the grounds give you enough variety to tell a full visual story from first light to last dance.

If you're engaged and you're considering it - go and visit. Stand under that ancient oak tree. Look out over the Surrey Hills. You'll know immediately. And when you do, get in touch, because I would absolutely love to be there with my camera.

Let's make beautiful photos together.
