How to Look Less Awkward in Wedding Photos

Feb 1, 2025 | Weddings

So, you’ve booked your wedding photographer (hopefully me, because, hi, I’m Anna Pumer, and I’m awesome). You’ve got the dress, the venue, the cake, and the Pinterest board with 47,000 ideas for “romantic sunset photos.” But now you’re lying awake at night wondering, “What if I look like a stiff, awkward mannequin in all my wedding photos?”

First of all, take a deep breath. Second of all, stop practicing your “smize” in the mirror. Tyra Banks would be proud, but we don’t need that level of intensity for your first kiss as a married couple.

Here’s the deal: I’ve been photographing weddings for years, and I’ve seen it all – the awkward arm placements, the “where do I put my hands?” panic, and the classic “I’m smiling so hard my face might crack” look. But guess what? I’ve got your back. Here are my top tips for looking like the effortlessly gorgeous, Instagram-worthy couple you truly are (even if you feel like a hot mess inside).

1. Stop Saying “Cheese” (Seriously, Stop It)

Cheese is for charcuterie boards, not for your wedding photos. Instead, think of something that actually makes you laugh—like that time your partner tried to assemble IKEA furniture and ended up with a “modern art” sculpture. Genuine laughter = magic.

2. Pretend I’m Not Here (But Also, Don’t Forget I’m Here)

I know, I know, it’s weird having someone follow you around with a camera all day. But here’s the thing: I’m basically a ninja. I’ll capture those candid moments when you’re not even looking. So go ahead, whisper something inappropriate to your partner, ugly cry during the vows, or bust out your questionable dance moves. I’ll be there, documenting it all like the silent, photo-taking fairy godmother I am.

3. Your Hands Are Not the Enemy

I get it. Hands are confusing. Do you hold them? Clasp them? Wave them around like you just don’t care? Here’s a pro tip: just touch each other. Hold hands, wrap your arms around each other, or gently place a hand on their cheek. If all else fails, just grab a glass of Prosecco. Problem solved.

4. Trust Me, I’ve Got Angles for Days

You might be thinking, “But what if I blink? What if I have a double chin? What if a bird poops on my dress?” Relax. I’ve got this. I know all the tricks—the flattering angles, the perfect lighting, and how to Photoshop out that bird poop (kidding… mostly). Just focus on having fun, and I’ll handle the rest.

5. Remember: It’s Your Wedding Day, Not a Photoshoot

At the end of the day, your wedding photos are about capturing the love, the laughter, and the little moments that make your relationship unique. So don’t stress about looking “perfect.” Perfect is boring. Real, raw, and ridiculously happy? That’s what I’m here for.

So, there you have it. My no-BS guide to looking amazing in your wedding photos. And if you’re still freaking out, just remember: I’ve seen it all, and I’ve never met a couple I couldn’t make look fabulous.

Ready to book your wedding photographer? (Hint: it’s me.) Pop me an email and let’s make some magic happen.

XOXO,
Anna
(Your future wedding photo BFF)

P.S. If you’re still practicing your smize, send me a pic. I need a good laugh. 😘
